Just in case members of the Board of Orange County Commissioners didn't already know it, a group of 40 to 50 people had a very visible way of putting them in the loop.
They hoisted signs of defiance during the board's meeting Tuesday night saying, "No Waste Transfer Station on Millhouse Road."
Although discussion of the siting of a waste transfer station was not on the night's agenda, about nine people spoke against the possibility of siting the transfer station on Millhouse Road near the Chapel Hill

Every night, Wang finds herself shuttered in her northwest Beijing apartment because of the stench from the nearby dump.
"For at least one hour, we don't open our windows as the smell from the rubbish tip is horrendous," said the frustrated young mother, standing outside her son's school in a city in the midst of a garbage crisis.
China's capital still relies heavily on burying its garbage - in 2008, 90% of the more than 6.7mn tonnes of domestic waste in Beijing was put in landfills.

The amount of discarded electronics equipment piling up at properties managed by the J. Walter Michel Agency was growing so much that it spanned generations.
"Some of it's probably from the '70s; some of it's from five to 10 years ago," said David McDaniel, who works for the local property management company.
So he loaded four computer monitors and other past-its-prime electronics gear into a van Friday morning and drove it to the Mississippi Farmers Market, site of Business E-Waste Day, during which

The Knoxville News Sentinel reported Saturday that some liquid waste shipments contained more mercury than anticipated and had to be burned at a slower rate to stay within the incinerator's emission requirements.
The incinerator closing was scheduled for the end of last month, but officials say it will now be Nov. 30.
The Department of Energy has discussed shutting down its Oak Ridge incinerator for several years, but extended its lifetime a couple of times to treat additional waste from nuclear clean

Our lives are filled with electronics.
Most modern American families own several electronic devices – TVs, cell phones, computers, mp3 players, GPS, video game platforms and more – designed to simplify our lives, entertain us and keep us connected with the ones we love and the world in general.
It seems like every year, one or more of these convenient and essential devices, however, becomes outdated.

MILLIONS of plastic shopping bags being touted as biodegradable in IGA supermarkets around Australia have failed to decompose as advertised during independent tests, raising serious questions over green marketing claims.
About 60 million of the plastic bags, bearing the brand name Goody and produced by packaging company NuPak, have been distributed through shopping centres, cafes and other stores.
But tests done in September by Belgian company Organic Waste Systems show that the bags were "completely
I am calling for the ACCC to begin an investigation into Goody bags based on these tests. If they find it doesn't biodegrade according to the national standards then it should clearly be removed from the market -Jon Dee
